Service user consultations

User consultation often forms a core part of any needs assessment, service review or evaluation. At CPI we have particular expertise in engaging ‘hidden populations’ who are not currently engaged with services and getting beyond the ‘usual suspects’ who often act as advocates for groups of clients or communities.

This aspect of our work really sets us apart. Our research team includes an ex-user, which often ensures we have ’privileged access’ in the way those who have not ‘been there’ will never manage. This is complemented by a robust academic approach.

Examples of our work include engaging with drug users, alcohol users, people with mental health problems and homeless populations. We have managed this in both urban and rural environments.

Consultation may involve one-to-one interviews, focus groups and ‘expert groups,’ where particular issues can be discussed more fully. These give a qualitative picture of services from the users’ perspective and a more in-depth appreciation of the key service issues for individuals. Users are often able to put into words the key messages that can be hidden amongst the figures.
