Innovation - CPI Way
"The CPI innovation model served as an extremely liberating experience and one that challenged traditional bureaucratic practices embedded within health and social care commissioning.”
Commissioner of large-scale health innovation project
CPI Methodology
CPI has a delivery methodology that is simple and practical.
Our methodology enables organisations and the people within these organisations to look beyond current practice and to explore new ways of working. This is particularly effective when tackling seemingly intractable problems where the answer is not to throw more resources at the issue, but to seek an entirely new and cost effective approach.
People
The reason why we've been consistently achieving results is that we employ the most important approach of all when it comes to innovation - i.e. that innovation does not come from plans, strategies or budgets - it comes from people.
Many people have bright ideas to improve services, but feel unable / unauthorised to put their ideas into practice. Therefore, good ideas are lost in the everyday work and processes - especially in the urgencies of over-stretched public organisations.
Managed risk
CPI's methodology ensures that innovation is well managed. We believe that innovation going everywhere ends up with innovation going nowhere. We establish clear boundaries to ensure that innovation projects achieve the greatest possible impact, whilst ensuring that risk is managed with the organisation.
Clear boundaries
- Set clear parameters - define a number of themes, geographic areas or client sub-sets around which innovative ideas can be explored
- Set a timeframe - innovation projects should be deliverable within three to four months. By setting a timeline organisations can be sure that all innovation activity is focused and does not spread out into work being carried out elsewhere
- Set a maximum funding pot - by putting aside a set amount of money to fund innovation projects, organisations can be sure that financial risk is strictly managed and that spending is tightly controlled.
Outcomes
CPI's methodology is a tried and tested concept that achieves a number of key objectives for any organisation:
- Identifies the innovators within any organisation - particularly among front-line staff and those engaged in face-to-face contact with clients;
- Identifies barriers within organisational systems that currently impede or prevent innovation;
- Enables a range of small pilot innovation projects to be developed that quickly implement and test new ideas and develop new ways of working;
- Enables front-line staff to develop and deliver small projects thereby improving motivation whilst releasing their creative energies;
- Delivers transformational learning within organisations as staff are introduced to the concept of innovation and how it can best be supported.
The innovation methodology used by CPI was developed by the Rensselaerville Institute in the United States. CPI is the sole license holder in the UK and therefore the only organisation entitled to deliver this innovation methodology.
