 Tackling Knives Action Programme

The issue

In 2009, the Home Office’s Tackling Knives Action Programme (TKAP) asked the Department of Health (DH) to enable Accident and Emergency (A&E) departments across England to share assault data with local crime partnerships. The aim was that better intelligence would be provided to support public protection activity.

The Department of Health approached CPI to see if we could make this happen.

CPI solution

CPI set up a grant programme that focussed on equipping A&E departments with the technology, processes and training to share data. The grants covered a wide variety of aspects including IT software, IT technician time, training costs etc. We distributed more than £200,000.

We also provided grant recipients with a local CPI mentor to support them in establishing a successful data sharing culture. These mentors proved invaluable to enabling A&E staff and crime partnership stakeholders to tackle any impediments that arose.

Outcomes achieved

In January 2010, we achieved the Home Office target of 100 hospitals collecting and sharing data with their local Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnerships.

What the client and others thought

The Department of Health was very happy with CPI’s work on this programme and expressed appreciation at board level for the hard work we put into this agenda.

Could this work elsewhere?

A grant programme in tandem with the provision of mentors is an extremely useful way of implementing rapid change. Our approach to the TKAP data sharing challenge could be replicated where speedy responses are needed to serious social problems that are growing at a significant pace.
